Last week we found a great beach for the kids (a nice bit of surf) so we headed back there today - its been really hot the last few days.Beautiful conditions - it was still as can be and the water is noticeably warmer than last week (they tell us that it is even warmer in August).
We still can't get over the sea of bodies 5 kilometres in each direction! It truely is so different to home where we ofter have our own beach.
But, it works... and we were still on the beach tonight at 7 pm when suddenly three tractors loaded with dozens of fisher-folk ROARED down the beach (narrowly dodging a few toddlers who were swimming in the shallows). I didn't think tractors could go that fast!
One tractor dragged out the fishing boat to the water where took a net about a kilometre out to sea. After an hour of watching with anticiaption, the net was eventually winched in by two tractors positioned about 200 metres apart on the beach. The gradually crept in towards each other as the nets were dragged clsoer to shore. 
The whole process took about an hour and the kids were mesmerised the whole time. I think it was mostly due to the "colourful" fishermen... AND women. we saw the Portugal's toughest fisher-woman! Her skin was like road tarmac!
The kids loved every minute. They will talk about "the catch" for years to come - sardinhas, mackeral, stingrays, squid, flounder and the crowd-pleaser, an octopus.
The highlight was an octopus having its head turned inside out and yet still trying to crawl away!
